Debbie: Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Test-Drive

Two Positive Reviews from DealerRater!

"I have purchased many vehicles in my lifetime and I have to hand it to John Mayo and the sales team at this Toyota dealership. They have met all of my expectations in the sales department so far and my wife is very happy with her car. The sales department followed through on everything they promised and went clearly out of their way to please us by traveling over 100 miles to get us the car we wanted. I am not an easy sale in any way and if they satisfied me, I'm sure they can do a great job with many others."

"My experience was great, John Mayo really worked with me to find a truck and a price that suited me best and kept me informed every step of the way. There was no surprises or problems in the process at all. I would highly recommend John, as he is honest and seems to really care about making sure that you are content with you purchase/lease."

Toyota Partners with EVSC to Improve Annual Collection of 14,000 Netbooks!

Loss of Class Time Cut by 79 Percent, Vast Reduction in Manpower Head Efficiencies

EVANSVILLE, Ind., May 10, 2013 – Janit Market is pleased she can continue teaching her English classes at Central High School with only a brief interruption when student netbooks are collected this year.  She’s also confident that because collections are more efficient, the distribution of netbooks next school year will be much more successful – the goal being to deliver a computer to each student on time.

That hasn’t always been the case.

“In the past, there was no uniformity to collections – and students were out of class too long,” Market said.  “Now, we have a team of people who are solely focused on collections.  I can keep an eye on my students and they take care of the paperwork.”

The difference?

A partnership between Toyota and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. (EVSC) that takes aim at ensuring the collection and distribution of 14,000 netbooks (grades 6 through 12) runs as smoothly as the production lines at the automaker’s plant in Princeton.  In fact, members from the Toyota Production System Support Center (TSSC) have provided on-site support free of charge since October, helping to create a more efficient system of collection and distribution.

EVSC is just one of nearly 200 companies and not-for-profit organizations that have been aided by Toyota in communities across North America.

“It has been an amazing turnaround,” said David Smith, superintendent for EVSC.  “We knew that training a team of individuals in operational excellence would be beneficial, but this work with TSSC has helped us to see very practically how efficiencies can free up people and money,   allowing us to direct resources to our core work in each classroom.

“We are excited with the success of the first two days of collections and anticipate a much smoother distribution cycle next fall.”

Netbook collections began Thursday, continued Friday and will also take place early next week.  Rick Cameron, chief operating officer for EVSC, pointed to some immediate improvements:

  • Less time taken away from the classroom during the collection process.  In the past, 30 students missed up to an hour of class time; now, that has been reduced to 12-and-a-half minutes – a 79 percent improvement.
  • Drastic reduction in manpower, which saves money.  Previously, 15 information technology employees gathered at each school to handle netbook returns, and teachers were responsible for checking in netbooks in homerooms.  Today, five employees handle the same workload, plus only one information technology staff member is needed to answer technical questions.  This frees up other IT staff to continue with the regular work of the school system.
  • Standardized work.  In the past, each school had its own method of collections and distribution.  Today, as at each Toyota plant across the U.S., each school follows the same guidelines.
  • Accurate inventory.  Via a bar-code scanning process, each laptop is now accounted for in a much more accurate manner.

“In the Toyota Production System, it all comes down to eliminating waste through solving problems,” said Craig Kelle, Toyota Production System (TPS) manager at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana.  “Before TPS, there was wasted time and duplication of work.  For instance, while the correct number of netbooks were shown by the system to be available, they were not available at the correct locations.”

As part of the improvement strategy, some “trial runs” took place at Central High School, which proved a turning point, Cameron said.  “Those involved could really see the improvements unfold.  We had a material and information flow chart; it just jumped out at you, how much more efficient we could be.”

Cameron said that while many savings in time and money have been realized through EVSC’s Operational Excellence Program over the past two years, the experience with TSSC has caused the school system to think about other areas in which process refinements can be made and savings realized.  “We have already started to look at Just-In-Time inventory for our bus-garage service.   We are taking TPS and trying to make it our way.”

That is music to Toyota’s ears.

“In a nutshell, that is why we do this,” said Scott Dickson, TSSC manager.  “While business and industry sectors are familiar with lean processes such as TPS, it is encouraging to see a school district thinking in such a way and willing to devote time and effort to becoming more efficient.  To see that light come on and for Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. to carry this to other parts of its operation is fantastic.  That is forward thinking.”

Dancing With The Stars’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy to Serve as Grand Marshal for 2013 Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race!

“Dancing with the Stars” professional dancer and popular cast member Maksim Chmerkovskiy will bring his ballroom flair to the 37th Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race as grand marshal of the long-running, prestigious charitable event. Chmerkovskiy will be joined by singer and former “American Idol” contestant Paul McDonald, who will open the race by performing the national anthem.

Chmerkovskiy, a Latin ballroom dance champion, choreographer and instructor, thrilled audiences as an outspoken and fiery competitor on “Dancing with the Stars.” McDonald was a popular finalist on Season 10 of “American Idol,” performing original music from his band, The Grand Magnolias.

The participation of both celebrities adds to the impressive list of Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race drivers from film, television, music, sports and the military who will speed through the historic 1.97-mile street circuit on the streets of downtown Long Beach, Calif. They include one of Mexico’s most acclaimed actresses Kate del Castillo; Jenna Elfman, star of “1600 Penn”; Olympic gold medalist Jessica Hardy; “Dallas” star Jesse Metcalfe; actor Jackson Rathbone, best known for his role as Jasper Halein the hit “Twilight” movie series; comedian Wanda Sykes, Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer and Jeremy Sisto, star of “Suburgatory.”

The celebrity participants also include Brett Davern, star of MTV's hit series “Awkward”; Mark Steines host of Hallmark Channel’s “Home & Family”; Michael Truccoof SyFy's acclaimed series "Battlestar Galactica" and most recently “Revenge”;Fox Sports/SPEED auto racing analyst and co-host of “Top Gear USA” Rutledge Wood and 2012 Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race winner and comedian Adam Carolla. Each will get behind the wheel of an identically prepared, race-ready Scion FR-S sports car to compete in the 10-lap event.

“We are thrilled to have Maksim Chmerkovskiy serve as grand marshal and Paul McDonald sing the anthem before this year’s race, bringing more star power to this high-profile charitable event,” said Les Unger, Toyota national motorsports manager. “Together their presence will help bring more attention to the children who benefit from The Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race.”

The Toyota Pro/Celebrity race is one of the longest-running, corporate-sponsored events of its kind. Toyota annually donates $5,000 to Racing for Kids on behalf of each participant and another $5,000 to the winning racer’s charity of choice.  Racing for Kids – a national nonprofit program benefiting children’s hospitals throughout the country – was created as a way to connect these children with their favorite celebrities and race car drivers.

Since 1991, Toyota has donated more than $2 million to the Racing for Kids organization, on behalf of this race and its participants. In addition to Toyota’s contributions, a $15,000 donation will be made in conjunction with the 16th annual “People Pole Award.” Sponsored by People magazine, the award honors the pole-position winner of the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race qualifying session on April 19.

Teen Vogue and Toyota Partner on Safe Driving Campaign to Help Educate and Empower Teenage Girls

In conjunction with Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, Teen Vogue and Toyota announced today “Arrive in Style,” a safe driving campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving among teenage girls and inspire them to make a mutual commitment with their mothers to drive safely.

While cars today are safer than ever, automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers. In 2010 seven teens between the ages of 16 and 19 died every day on average from motor vehicle injuries.

“We are thrilled to partner with Toyota on this important initiative. When we saw the scary statistics around distracted driving, we knew this was a cause worth taking on,” said Jason Wagenheim, Teen Vogue Vice President and Publisher. “Teen Vogue’s influential young readers are the perfect ambassadors not only to participate in this initiative, but also to help build awareness and educate their peer groups on the importance of driver safety. Toyota, with the success of their ongoing work in this arena, is the ideal partner.”

Teen Vogue really shares our commitment to help keep teens safe, and with their reach and readership they’ve been a great partner to help amplify our longstanding efforts to empower teen girls to be safer drivers,” said Marjorie Schussel, Corporate Manager of Corporate Marketing for Toyota Motor North America (TMA).  “We also are excited to involve moms since our approach to teen safety has always included outreach to parents as well.”

The “Arrive in Style” campaign – developed in partnership by Teen Vogue, Toyota Motor North America and their ad agency of record, Dentsu America – launches this week and includes print, digital and social media elements that will run through February 2014. Kicking off with the May print edition of Teen Vogue, which hits stands this week, monthly advertorials will feature helpful tips and advice from Toyota on different safe driving topics.  The campaign will also include stories and online videos of Teen Vogue readers and their mothers about their commitment to driving safely, underscoring the special roles that mothers and daughters play in inspiring each other.

Extending into digital, the campaign will drive Teen Vogue’s audience to the “Arrive in Style” online hub, teenvogue.com/arriveinstyle. The site will feature Toyota’s Mutual Driving Agreement that mothers and daughters can e-sign and share via Facebook for a chance to win monthly prizes. In addition to signing the Agreement, teens can upload a photo on the microsite of them and their mom “air driving” for a chance to win a trip to New York City to be featured in the February 2014 issue of Teen Vogue.

Study Reveals Distracted Driving Is Pervasive Among Teen Girls

“Arrive in Style’s” unique approach of involving mothers is based, in part, on the recent study by Toyota and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), which found a significant correlation between teen and parent driving behaviors, suggesting that parents are a major influence on a teen’s driving habits.

“We know from our Study with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute that parents who engage in distracting driving behaviors more frequently have teens who engage in distracting behaviors,” said Dr. Tina Sayer, Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) Principal Engineer and teen safe driving expert.  “It is critical for parents to talk to their teens about driving safety and to always be the drivers they want their teens to be.”

In conjunction with the launch of “Arrive in Style”, Toyota released new findings from the Study regarding driving behaviors of teen girls:

  • Sixty-two percent of teen girls report using a cell phone while driving (handheld and/or hands-free).
  • Nearly one in three girl teens (30 percent) reads a text or email once or more every time they drive.
  • Almost a quarter of girl teens (23 percent) respond to a text once or more every time they drive.
  • Almost one in five (19 percent) of teen girl drivers report that they have extended conversations via text message while driving.
  • More than half (51 percent) of girls say they search for music on a portable music player, such as an iPod, while driving.
  • Twelve percent of girls report that they update or check social media, such as Facebook or Twitter, while driving.
  • Seventy percent of teen girl drivers report they drive with two or three teen passengers and no adults in their car, whichis associated with a doubling of a driver’s risk of being killed in a crash, as compared to having no passengers.[2]

For additional findings from the Study, please visit www.toyota.com/csrc.

“Arrive In Style” is the latest initiative from Toyota that is designed to help keep teens safe on the road.  Toyota Driving Expectations (www.toyotadrivingexpectations.com) provides hands-on, real world defensive driving courses that go far beyond what is taught in standard driver education courses, while Toyota Teen Driver (www.toyotateendriver.com) offers free online teen safety resources to parents, teens, educators and schools.   The Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Center (www.toyota.com/csrc) works with leading North American Universities, hospitals, research institutions and agencies on research designed to better understand teen drivers’ risks and behaviors and identify effective recommendations to help keep them safe.

A Positive Review from DealerRater

"I was involved in a car accident the Tuesday before we bought the vehicles. Because of this accident we had to trade the one car we already paid off and loved so we could afford to get a car. That also meant we needed to buy my husband a new car. I know, who doesn't love a new car but NOW we have two car payments. Without adding to the stress we were already under, Chris Karangis helped us ease into this difficult transition. He was very honest with us and open to our needs as a family. Thanks Chris!!"

A Positive Review from DealerRater!

"Maybe production in Japan is slow; the color I wanted was not available. I test drove 2 different vehicles. One with a color I would later choose. Then thought that perhaps the one I picked was probably better suited for me. Betsy took my hand (figuratively speaking) and led me down this complex path of decision making. No, I was not pushed or pulled but thoughtfully, kindly guided past my uneasiness. Time consuming traveling to get to a dealer one wants to make the right decision. One of life's important decisions was easier to make with Betsy's down to earth business attitude. Try it you'll like it."
