Toyota Presents the Single-Passenger, Smart INSECT City Car Concept

A single  passenger vehicle has been on every automaker’s mind, and Toyota is the one who has finally materialized that thought. At CEATEC Japan 2012 last week, The Company was seen with this ultra-compact, single passenger electric vehicle called the “Smart INSECT”. Short for “information network social electric city transporter,” it connects the home, vehicle, and people in new ways through Toyota’s cloud services. The Smart Insect concept seems like a thinner version of city cars like the Smart ForTwo or Scion iQ, with some kind of battery-electric drivetrain. The interior has an aircraft-like yoke rather than a traditional steering wheel along with small doors which open upwards.

The Smart INSECT incorporates new features like face and voice recognition. Motion sensors and cameras identify pre-registered drivers as they come closer and it will also welcome the person with blinking lights, messages and sounds from the instrument panel. It also has the capacity to connect to the driver’s home via a smartphone to manage systems like door locks and air conditioning. It can also apparently predict the driver’s intentions like opening doors automatically when driver reaches out to the door etc by tracking body movements. In the interior, a large display is featured above the steering wheel which offers a detailed GPS mavigation system which is connected to the cloud-based Toyota Smart Center, which hosts a virtual agent that provides navigation instructions through voice command.

As of now, the Smart Insect is only a concept, but the regular Coms do give us a detail regarding its abilities. Unfortunately, Toyota says they have no plans to take the Smart Insect concept car to production.

Toyota to indroduce ways to increase fuel efficiency in its non-hybrid models

Toyota has put its proverbial powertrain eggs in just the hybrid basket in recent years, but it looks like the automaker is going add of downsized engines and direct injection to help increase non-hybrid efficiency.

According to Automotive News, Toyota will introduce a slew of revised engines and new transmissions over the next two years. Toyota has quickly become one of the few automakers not to take advantage of the efficiency gains of variable valve timing direct injection, and turbocharging.

Toyota is hoping to begin rolling out two new engines and two new transmissions starting next year. AN reports the first of which will be a new 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle I-4 with direct injection, slated to find its way into the brand’s hybrids. Coming in 2014 will be a 2.0-liter turbo-four, along with a new continuously variable transmission for small-to-midsize cars and six- or eight-speed transmissions for larger vehicles. Currently, only Toyota hybrids use a CVT and the Lexus LS and IS F are the only models in the company’s portfolio to use eight-speed automatics. It’s also been rumored that Toyota may introduce a CVT in the next-generation Corolla to replace the current car’s  four-speed auto.

According to our source close to the matter, Toyota originally planned on introducing a direct-injection V-6 in the 2013 Avalon, but delayed that to 2015. The automaker has had direct injection-equipped engines on sale outside of North American since 2006, and only recently introduced the technology in the U.S. in the Lexus GS and LS and Scion FR-S.

Here are some quick tips to take cre of your vehicle during the cooler months:

Keep the gas tank at least half full throughout the fall and winter. This will reduce condensation, making your vehicle easier to start on cold mornings.

Have your charging system checked. Cold weather starts make the vehicle battery work much harder and getting stranded in the cold is no fun!

Change your oil and oil filter. Clean, high quality engine oil goes a long way in protecting the motor in cold start situations. Use the oil recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
